Sue was first elected as Labour MP for Workington constituency in May 2015, and was re-elected in June 2017. She has served as Labour’s Shadow Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs since February 2017, and is the Labour co-chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Nuclear Energy.

Prior to her election to Parliament, Sue was a Labour member of Cumbria County Council for Howgate division, 2013-15, and served as vice-chair of the Children and Young People’s Scrutiny Committee.
Born in Berkshire, Sue was educated at St Bartholomew’s comprehensive school, Newbury, and studied English Literature at Cambridge College of Arts and Technology. She worked in social services, as a book editor, and as a communications and community relations consultant. She previously worked for former Labour MPs Tess Kingham (Gloucester) and Michael Foster (Worcester).
Sue is a member of the GMB and an associate of The Consultation Institute. She sings in and is chair of the Parliament Choir.
Sue is married to Ross, who is a local parish councillor. They live just outside Workington and have grown-up children and a chocolate Labrador, Max.
